Chapter Eleven

Mabel and Emily had very quickly got over the thrill at being present during a real live murder mystery and were now plain bored.

They’d exhausted all possible motives for the murder that they could think of and had even written down a list of salient points so they didn’t miss anything out when relating the events to Agnes at the WI. The noise in the dining room had increased since the Admiral and Jimmy had finished their questioning, with the majority of it coming from the snug.

‘I think Charlie must have used his usual diplomacy when questioning the performers,’ observed Emily wryly.

Mabel nodded, completely missing her friend’s sarcasm, before glancing towards the dining room doors anxiously. ‘I do hope they don’t take too much longer, poor old Pickles probably has his legs in plaits by now. He’s going to think we’ve gone off and left him.’

‘It wouldn’t be the first time,’ commented Emily tartly.

‘Shall we play a game or something to pass the time?’ Mabel asked, suddenly animated, ‘I love a good round of hangman.’ Emily was about to scoff at the idea when she suddenly remembered she’d brought down her new iPad – she’d been loath to leave it in the bedroom – just in case.

‘We could watch tonight’s episode of Britain’s Got Talent,’ she said enthusiastically, lifting the device out of her bag.

‘How?’ Mabel asked doubtfully, ‘That finished hours ago.’

‘Watch and learn dear,’ Emily declared self-importantly, placing the iPad on the table.

‘I’m not sure about that Emily.’ Mabel shook her head, eyeing the tablet uneasily. ‘I once tried to use Tory’s computer and I accidently deleted the internet.’

Emily stared at her friend in horror, then looked back down at the iPad. In truth it had been a Christmas present from their daughter. She’d shown Emily how to get something called BBC iPlayer and how to goggle things. But that was all.

Jimmy had messed around with something when they’d first arrived so she’d be able to use it while she was here, but what if he’d managed to delete the internet while he was about it?

Hurriedly, she pressed the buttons as she’d been instructed and breathed a sigh of relief. The internet was still there. She held up the iPad to Mabel and pointed to the little compass. ‘See there Mabel, that’s Goggle.’

She put the device back on the table, intending to find the BBC thingy, but then she had a brainwave. ‘I say Mabel, shall we goggle Darcy DeVine – see if we can find anything interesting?’

‘Do you think we should?’ Mabel asked excitedly, ‘I mean what if someone finds out?’

Emily shook her head, ‘Nobody will find out. The internet’s on some kind of big spider’s web. According to Jim, anybody’s allowed to use it.’

Mabel watched eagerly as Emily tapped Darcy DeVine’s name into the box. ‘Do you think we’ll get into trouble?’ she asked. Emily shook her head and tapped on the word images at the top of the page. Almost instantly a whole raft of pictures appeared on the screen.
